How my illness showed me that nonlinear thinking is an important skill to develop

Jul 24, 2025

So it’s been a minute, dear readers, and I’m glad to be back!  Just after my last post I was diagnosed with cancer.  Don’t worry… it’s been a long six months but I’m on the other side of it and cancer free!!!  There were many things that I learned as I went from diagnosis to surgeries to recovery.  One that I am now applying in my work and personal life is the value of nonlinear thinking, which, when you’re facing a difficult time (illness or otherwise), is an invaluable skill to develop.  Let me explain…

I was ready!  I had my spreadsheet of pros and cons for different approaches. I had my list of questions for the different doctors. I did my due diligence by talking to those who had been through similar diagnoses. I thought I had it all, but after some time I realized I had a process but I was missing ME.  When one speaks to a medical professional, it’s easy to get swayed by their experience and confidence in what they are saying and, believe me, it can all sound good.  After speaking to one doctor I was sure about the path I should take only to be convinced by the next doctor that their way was better.  This is where the “me” comes in.

The most important questions to ask myself were not about what I should do, but about who I am and who I want to be for the rest of my years.  I had to check in with my values and think about the future I want to create.  What I uncovered (or remembered) is that I am… an athlete,  a world traveler, a very lucky wife, a coach that helps others find their best selves, a nature lover, a good friend, and more. What decisions could I make to ensure THAT person has a long, wonderful life ahead of her?  It’s with that lens that all my research became quite clear and valuable.

So, even though my work is focused on helping nonprofits, I am opening up my coaching practice to include individuals who are going through the challenge of a difficult medical or potentially life-changing decision.  If you know of anyone that could benefit from speaking with an experienced coach who listens with compassion and understanding to help them find their way forward, please send them my way.  Click “How to Engage” at the top of this page to take you (or those you are thinking of) to a free initial coaching session.

Stay well all and reach out if I can be of help!!
